Jenny : The Christmas Craft Fayre raised £60 in stall fees and £55 in teas/ coffees and the raffle.

Many thanks to Donna, Wendy and Ian, who took it in turns to do teas/ coffees & raffle tickets, and to Diane for the lovely throw she made for a raffle prize.

We had a book sale on January 19th

Thanks to Janet, Deborah and Susan, it raised an amazing £150. We are getting lots of donated books, and will be having more book sales in the future.

News on further library events are on our website, on posters in the library and Laura is adding them all to the blog & FB.

(We would like more events organised by the group, such as author visits or interesting talks etc. Jenny & Louise are happy to do the posters and stay behind in the evenings for any events, but we need action more than just ideas!)

The group agreed to purchase 2 hot water dispensers for tea/coffee as we currently have only 2 urns available in the library service. The group also agreed to purchase a Mary Berry cook book as a prize for our Comic Relief Bake Off event (15th March).

Donna – The storyteller Eltjo de Vries could not hold a Christmas storytelling activity as he was in a panto, but Donna hopes to book him in the future for an evening event. He does adult storytelling, and has done two at Newport Library , both of which attracted lots of publicity.

The helium balloons idea proved to be too expensive.

Donna has all the things she needs to hold a pub-style quiz night. Jenny said this might be better later in the year when the evenings were lighter, but we would like to hold one.

Donna asked for ideas for future events.

Deborah asked if the events have to be fund-raising & Jenny replied no. Events draw attention and publicity to the library, which is our aim. However, as we hold regular events ourselves, the library staff do not have time to organise FOSL events on top of their own, but we can do posters and stay behind in the evenings as required.

Deborah suggested themed events, where we get book collections to supplement a speaker on various subjects. Jenny or Louise can order books on particular subjects from other libraries if we have enough notice.(3-4 weeks)

Heather suggested a debating group.

Conrad would like another Historical Society display, date to be arranged.

Wendy is going to sell her plants again, which was very successful last summer.

Donna will again have ideas for an Easter children’s event, with help from Jenny (Deborah & Conrad?)
Provisionally set for Tuesday, April 2nd 10.30 – 11.30.

EASTER CRAFT FAYRE – Saturday 23rd March 10.00 – 3.00
Once again we would like prizes for a raffle, and a timetable of volunteers to spend an hour or so doing teas / coffee & cakes. Please let Jenny or Louise know if you are available.

All members agreed that we must organise a bank account before the next meeting.

Jenny :
I would like to thank all the members, including those who volunteered to be on the committee at our first meeting, for all they have done in the last year.
May I suggest that at the AGM we discuss if we need more people on the committee and for future committee members to contact each other before meetings to arrange who is going to attend?

  1. Update on FOSL: We are now represented on the Sandown Forum - an organisation which represents many local organisations and believes in working together to build a strong community. We can work within this umbrella organisation to increase membership and disseminate information, as well as gather support for our own aims.
