Children's author Ian Whybrow's visit to Sandown Library on Thursday 20th November was a big success. He ran two sessions, one tailored for the local school and another to local children & adults. He was very entertaining & both sessions were different. Books were signed and stories enjoyed by all.

Minutes of the AGM Meeting held 22nd July 2014
Apologies: Wendy, Diane, Heather Absent: Ian, Maria
Attending: Donna, Eileen, Robert, Susan, John, Conrad, Laura, Janet, Tim, Jenny
1. The Minutes of the last meeting were agreed. Apologies were given, absence noted and attendance taken as above. It was agreed that in future we will run with the meeting dates as agreed to avoid problems associated with trying to change dates to suit all at a late stage.
2. Conrad Kirvan formally presented the accounts to date after many problems in setting up a bank account and balancing the available receipts, dated from January 2013.
The Constitution has been amended thus. As part of this change, Conrad has:
· Met with the Committee and staff to formally discuss the accounts.
· Closed the account at Barclays in Shanklin and opened a new account at Lloyds in Sandown. This has been formalized with new signatories.
Future financial actions must be formalized with an invoice and receipt system please. Previous fundraising events have been accounted for except the ‘Lucky Dip’ and the Pie and Mash event. Petty cash from staff can be used for small amounts and a cheque issued for other matters. The agreement from the last meeting to give £100 pm for book stock has been rescinded.
3. Update from previous events/action points:
· Upstairs – No Progress.
a) Jenny’s planned community room now looks unlikely. However, the Historical Society may be able to use some room for their exhibits. Also, Bruce Mardle of the Film Festival is thinking of running a film club upstairs. He needs a projector, audio equipment and blackout blinds to accomplish this. He is investigating this at present.
b) Curtains for Upstairs – large room. These are very shabby now. However there is no money available to replace.
· Outside – No Progress.
· The Management at last replaced old fencing with metal railings. It was hoped that we could focus now on updating this ‘garden’ area, however Jenny feels that this plan is untenable due to possible problems with the upstairs neighbour and the awkward access. Jenny suggested a ‘wild garden’ instead.
· Janet will talk to Jewsons with the aim of delaying any available help.
Children’s Library area – Actioned. This area has been cleaned up with a coat of paint. No news re a decoration for this wall?
The previous Quiz & Chips event was very successful and it is believed we may be able to expand the number of people attending in future. However, more people are needed to help at these events as the people involved feel it could be better managed with extra help.
Note was made that we need more people in the group to be able to offer help. We also need to increase active publicity. It is suggested that we increase proactive recruitment at the above events. We could also explore the possibility of giving out library stickers to increase awareness. A good suggestion is to have an open morning, or coffee morning for Friends.
Jenny also noted that the staff finds it difficult to manage the publicity work, and to staff the events, also it is difficult in managing volunteers. Robert has agreed to help in this area.
4. Committee appointments: Officers did not step down, but an informal discussion led to them being re-appointed in their current roles (due to lack of available volunteers) with Tim Sedgwick joining Janet in managing the event liaison.
5. Any Other Business
Britain’s Got Talent – August. Janet is organising this to take place in the Sandringham Hotel on August 12th. Adverts have been placed to get applicants for auditions. It was agreed that we should purchase a cup as prize. Janet will update us.
October – Wear It Pink Tea Party.
Eileen suggested looking into holding a Spelling Bee.
Next meetings: 9th October 2014 and 8th January 2015.
Attending: Donna, Eileen, Robert, Susan, John, Conrad, Laura, Janet, Tim, Jenny

National Libraries Day took place this past Saturday.
Everyone who wrote a few lines about what the library means to them, or
things they remember about Sandown library from the past were offered a
slice of cake with a drink of tea or coffee.
See below for the delicious cake the library had made ...
Sandown Library staff have put
all the thoughts and memories into a celebration book, and it makes very
interesting reading with three customers recalling Miss Wright the
librarian, Mr Grapes in charge of the geology museum and Mr Matthews the
caretaker who lived in the flat upstairs.
February is Love Libraries
month, so the book will remain available for anyone to add their words to it. Pop down to Sandown library to add yours.

Minutes of the Meeting held 16 January 2014
Apologies: Ian, Janet
Attending: Donna, Eileen, Jenny, Wendy, Heather, Robert, Susan, Diane, John, Conrad, Laura.
1. The Minutes of the last meeting were agreed.
2. The group formally sent their sympathies to Ian Ward on the loss of his wife. Our thoughts are with him.
3. Ian Ward will now step down from the Committee as Treasurer and nominations were taken for the post. Donna proposed Conrad Kirvan and Heather seconded this motion. Conrad was therefore formally invited to the post of Treasurer and agreed to this. The Constitution will be amended thus. As part of this change, Conrad will:
· Arrange a meeting with the Committee in attendance to formally discuss and agree the accounts. It is believed that there is approximately £3000 to be banked as soon as possible. This needs to be formally accounted for with a list drawn up of events and amounts raised.
· Formally hand over accounts from Ian Ward to Conrad.
· Close the account at Barclays in Shanklin and open a new account at Lloyds in Sandown. Conrad will pick up forms and coin bags this week.
· Future financial actions must be formalized with an invoice and receipt system please.
4. Update from Staff
· Cuts to services were discussed. Jenny suggested these were not as drastic as first thought. The book stock may be affected however, and the delivery service.
· There was a brief discussion about the possibilities of Town Councils taking over the running of the Libraries. Jenny would keep us in touch with any updates on this. Heather mentioned here may be a leaning towards community run libraries. Again we would keep an eye on this situation and report any points for discussion to the staff and group.
· Book Stock: FoSL suggested we allocate an amount – perhaps up to £100 per month - towards replenishing the book stock. This was agreed in the group.
· Room Upstairs – A surveyor has suggested moving the water pipe rather than boxing this in. This action would save space and cost approximately the same - £600 suggested. Another quote is coming but the group agreed with Jenny’s suggestion that this plan be put on hold for the moment as other suggestions for updating the library are have been put forward.
· Children’s Library area – to be updated with a coat of paint. It was suggested that a large pot of magnolia paint be bought via Jenny (invoiced and reimbursed). This work would be carried out by a Library insured colleague free of charge. Thanks were given for this aid.
· Updating Library areas: Jenny and Louise have discussed the possibility of updating computer chairs and library chairs. Some information was given out but it was agreed that Health and Safety issues must be considered before any purchases were agreed. Jenny will revert.
· Outside: The Management has agreed to replace old fencing with metal railings asap.
5. Any Other Business
Events - another wonderful 50p Book Sale to be held Saturday 25th January from 10-3pm. Help would be appreciated in setting up and clearing up please.
National Library Day held on Feb 8th. Jenny has ordered a large cake and is running a caption competition with people completing ‘I love my library because…’. A prize of Free DVDs for a year will be a good draw!
Cooking Academy – Friday Feb 28th at 6pm at £2.50 per person, booked in advance. This will demonstrate how to ‘liven up your leftovers!’
Louise was due to be on the IW Radio (again!). We need more press exposure, especially the CP. We currently have line entries in most press. Research and discuss next meeting.
Donna will start planning the next Quiz and Chips to be held in May. It was agreed to keep the ticket price at £5, but that a more reasonable amount be given for the Caterers. It was agreed that a limit of 50 people will be enforced and that places must be booked in advance.
Next Meetings: It was agreed that we will try to keep to quarterly meetings on the first Thursday where possible. Future dates were therefore arranged as 3rd April, 3rd July, 9th October 2014 and 8th January 2015.

Happy New Year!
From all of us at Friends of Sandown Library, happy 2014 everyone!
We'd like to kick-start the year by congratulating Janet, who braved wind and rain to stand in the High Street for Sandown Fun Day and sell lucky dips for £1 each. She has raised over £80 from her lucky dips, so well done Janet!
Another thank you goes to Fran and the Joy of Singing group who joined us at Sandown Library on the 14th December to offer a delightful carol service.
Of course, a very important thanks goes to everyone who got involved in the many Sandown Library and FOSL events last year. Pictured below are some of the highlights from 2013. We're looking forward to another fantastic year ...
