The 'Wear it Pink' Tea Party Raises £336 For Breast Cancer Care

On the 24th October Sandown Library held a 'Wear it Pink' tea party to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care. In response, a huge turnout of locals popped by for a cuppa and some cake, helping to raise a total of £336 so far.

Check out these fab pretty-in-pink pictures from the event, courtesy of Jenny Simon:

Cakes, cakes, cakes!!!

The first arrivals enjoy a morning treat.
The celebratory set-up.
Sandown Library - looking pretty in pink.
Whether pouring teas, baking cakes or consuming them, we'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who got involved and contributed behind the scenes, and to all those who popped in to Sandown Library to support this special cause.

Stay tuned at the FOSL blog for forthcoming events.

Friends of Sandown Library Meeting: 3rd October 2013

Friends of Sandown Library: Minutes of the Meeting held 3rd October 2013

Apologies:
Ian, Heather, Wendy, Jenny, Janet

This meeting was brief due to only three people in attendance; Eileen, Louise and Laura. Louise gave apologies for Janet who is recuperating from an operation. All best wishes to her.

1.    Recent Events:
The Quiz and Chips was a great success, raising £165.00.  A brilliant job and thanks to Friends who organised and supported this event!
The Book Sale raised a huge £281.00.  Again, thanks for your support.
Donations have also been raised to the amount of £96.00
The PA system was purchased and was a success.

Action: Ian to collect £542.00 as above for banking please.

2.    Treasurers Report:

The financial situation is that we started with a balance of £859.18; a cheque for £178.81 has cleared leaving a bank balance of £680.37.

3.    Building Works:

Louise, Jenny and Sue would like FoSL to discuss the building works. Property Services have stated that whilst they are able to deliver the works, they are unfortunately unable to pay for them. Staff would obviously like the community room to be completed but would like to know what FoSL think?  It was suggested that the costs should be researched and reported at the next opportunity so that member’s views may be solicited.

Action: Please send any comments to Eileen for the record.

The gate would be secured with a new padlock, but again any further works outside     would not have costs met by the Council and this situation does need further discussion.

4.    Planned events:

Wear it Pink T Party on the 24th October.
Christmas Craft Fair – 30th November. The hire costs will be £5 per table and tables will need to be booked through staff. This event will be advertised online, council site, CP, Beacon etc,. Any further news on events, please pass on details.

5.    AOB:

There is due to be a feature in the CP shortly re Sandown, focusing on ‘saving the High Street’ by shopping locally. The SBA have negotiated a good deal with an ad for £50 only, plus some editorial per ad.  Are we interested – what would we advertise?

Action: Quick response please.

Funding: It is of great concern that money is being squeezed ever more and some     discussion took place regarding the possibility of finding funding for the library. The     consensus seems to be that it is unclear where funding may be available from. If any     member has views or advice on this subject, it may be relevant to research and discuss at our next meeting?

Author Talks:  Felicity Fair Thompson will be at Waterstones for a book signing this weekend, and has invited FoSL members to the book launch evening on Monday 7th. A poster is in the library with further details.

Literary Festival:  If members are attending any events, it would be useful to try to obtain interest and support for FoSL there.

Next Meeting:
The next meeting will be held in January and a date will be mailed in due course.

Sandringham Hotel made the pies free of charge, and they were delivered right on time. Entertainment was provided by Pepper Gray, also free of charge. By the end of the evening there was dancing, singing and random joke telling.

Keep up to date with the FoSL folder...

Friends of Sandown Library would like to say a big thank you to Jenni who has been looking after the FoSL minutes folder, of which she has recently added two new sections . . .

1. Event / fundraising forms -- Anyone who has an idea for events or fundraising that they would like to either host or suggest can add it onto a form. If they require help, they should mention this here. Or, if they would like to help at another event, they can make a note of this here, also.

2. Jenni has also added a calendar, so that everyone can easily see when Sandown Library or FoSL will be holding their next events.

The folder will be kept amongst the local interest books, next to the photocopier in the library.

Recent events at Sandown Library: Wendy the Witch . . .

After another fun event was hosted at Sandown Library we would like for you to meet Wendy the Witch ...
As well as reading stories, Wendy played a Find The Rat game on Saturday 9th at Sandown Library. She also gave out free books and World Book Day vouchers, which can be exchanged at book shops for any of the free World Book Day childrens books.

If you would like to keep in touch about forthcoming events at Sandown Library, visit the Sandown Library Website: http://www.iwight.com/living_here/libraries/your_local_library/sandownl.asp or call 01983 402749 during opening hours.

Minutes of meeting 31st January 2013...

PRESENT :
Wendy, Diane, Conrad, John, Susan, Robert, Donna, Laura, Heather, Deborah, Jenny.

IMPORTANT!
The next meeting will be the A.G.M.
The date is April 25th at 6.30pm.
At this meeting all committee members will resign and be re-elected, so anyone interested in being on the committee must attend this event.
The committee members are Chairman, Deputy Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and Press Officer.

Content:

Jenny : The Christmas Craft Fayre raised £60 in stall fees and £55 in teas/ coffees and the raffle.

Many thanks to Donna, Wendy and Ian, who took it in turns to do teas/ coffees & raffle tickets, and to Diane for the lovely throw she made for a raffle prize.

We had a book sale on January 19th

Thanks to Janet, Deborah and Susan, it raised an amazing £150. We are getting lots of donated books, and will be having more book sales in the future.

News on further library events are on our website, on posters in the library and Laura is adding them all to the blog & FB.

(We would like more events organised by the group, such as author visits or interesting talks etc. Jenny & Louise are happy to do the posters and stay behind in the evenings for any events, but we need action more than just ideas!)

The group agreed to purchase 2 hot water dispensers for tea/coffee as we currently have only 2 urns available in the library service. The group also agreed to purchase a Mary Berry cook book as a prize for our Comic Relief Bake Off event (15th March).

Donna – The storyteller Eltjo de Vries could not hold a Christmas storytelling activity as he was in a panto, but Donna hopes to book him in the future for an evening event. He does adult storytelling, and has done two at Newport Library , both of which attracted lots of publicity.

The helium balloons idea proved to be too expensive.

Donna has all the things she needs to hold a pub-style quiz night. Jenny said this might be better later in the year when the evenings were lighter, but we would like to hold one.

Donna asked for ideas for future events.

Deborah asked if the events have to be fund-raising & Jenny replied no. Events draw attention and publicity to the library, which is our aim. However, as we hold regular events ourselves, the library staff do not have time to organise FOSL events on top of their own, but we can do posters and stay behind in the evenings as required.

Deborah suggested themed events, where we get book collections to supplement a speaker on various subjects. Jenny or Louise can order books on particular subjects from other libraries if we have enough notice.(3-4 weeks)

Heather suggested a debating group.

Conrad would like another Historical Society display, date to be arranged.

Wendy is going to sell her plants again, which was very successful last summer.

Donna will again have ideas for an Easter children’s event, with help from Jenny (Deborah & Conrad?)
Provisionally set for Tuesday, April 2nd 10.30 – 11.30.

EASTER CRAFT FAYRE – Saturday 23rd March 10.00 – 3.00
Once again we would like prizes for a raffle, and a timetable of volunteers to spend an hour or so doing teas / coffee & cakes. Please let Jenny or Louise know if you are available.

All members agreed that we must organise a bank account before the next meeting.

Jenny :
I would like to thank all the members, including those who volunteered to be on the committee at our first meeting, for all they have done in the last year.
May I suggest that at the AGM we discuss if we need more people on the committee and for future committee members to contact each other before meetings to arrange who is going to attend?
