Festive updates from Sandown Library...

It has been a busy festive season at Sandown library, with the Christmas Story time event, a Christmas Craft Fair, and the usual events still going full swing. So it's about time for a update . . .

The Christmas Craft Fayre raised £115 for FOSL. We'd like to say a big thank you to all the friends who took it in turns to serve teas and coffees, and sell raffle tickets. Also to those who popped by and helped FOSL to raise funds.

Pictured here is the impressive Knitivity scene that was knitted by Sandown Library Knit & Natter group, for the library. Knit and Natters take place on Fridays at 1:30 pm. Come along with no experience or plenty. Free tea and coffee is provided. Just pop into Sandown library to register an interest.

Santa's Stories, held on December 15th had a great turnout. Santa's stories were read by Rob Jones, Head of Libraries. We have recieved confirmation from some elves that all posted letters are now on the way, by reindeer express, to the North Pole.

In this photo to the left, some of the penpals can be seen receiving their letters from Sandown USA, which were delayed due to the hurricane.

Meanwhile the roof has been fixed, and the library has had a refurbishment! Pink is the theme, and were loving the new look. Pop by for a visit when you have time.

If you would like to join the friends, or if you have any books to donate for the forthcoming january book sale, get in touch at friendsofsandownlibrary@gmail.com, or pop into Sandown Library. We'd love to hear from you.

Gigantic January Book Sale!

Come along to the Sandow Library gigantic book sale on Saturday 19th January between 10.00am and 3.00pm. All books just 50p each!

Agenda – Any business arising
To discuss updates for the next events
Any other business

1.    It was agreed that meetings would now be held quarterly. Next in January 2013. Any extraordinary meeting can be called however, with details posted online and in the library.
2.    Events;   The next event will be the Christmas Craft Fair on Saturday 1st December. Bookings have been taken already and FoSL would be involved only with the refreshments offered. Volunteers are needed for this, so that a Rota for the afternoon can be arranged. Please contact the FoSL Chair, Donna in the first instance. Advertising for this event has been arranged by Laura, but posters still need to be done. Raffle prizes are still needed please.
3.    Donna has suggested a ‘Storytelling for Adults’ ticketed event also in December. Details will follow.
4.    A Balloon Release event was also suggested for Christmas Eve. Donna will obtain quotes and other details will follow.
5.     Funds raised stand at £368.85. Naming the Dog raised £71.00 – a great success.
6.    It was agreed that Eileen would chase up the opening of a Bank Account at Barclays Bank subject to informing the Treasurer.
7.    Update on Library renovation:  Scaffolding will soon be in place so that the roof may be fixed. The room has been inspected and further works agreed by the Council. A finish date is not yet available.
8.    Further works to the Library are taking place: The layout of the main library area will be changed, with an automated check in desk and new staff workspace constructed. There will be some pink highlights in areas such as the new carpet and desk to brighten up the room. There will be new shelving installed – some will use empty space by the windows, and there may be a new (pink) sofa.  The old oak check in counters will be removed, but it was suggested that FoSL ask that these counters be preserved in some way and perhaps used to raise funds for the library. Ideas for the ‘Preserve the Counter’ project are welcome!
9.    The group was pleased to note that new technology is being used successfully at the library now.  For instance ‘Penfriend technology’ has arrived to aid partially sighted customers, and there is access to magazine subscriptions and educational courses available online through the main Library Service site.  Staff are able to offer further information about these services to library users.

The library will be closed from Saturday 22nd December – Wednesday 2nd January, reopening Thursday 3rd January.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday 31st January 2013 at 6pm.

Any other business or notifications regarding these Minutes should be made to the Secretary, Eileen Schaff.

New room!

So far Sandown Library and The Friends (FoSL) have raised an amazing £370 through sales of books, plants, hand-made cards and Janet's Name The Dog. Funds are intended to renovate the upstairs room at the Library to allow for extra space for community activities and other fun stuff.

As you can see from the picture, Sandown Library staff have been busy bumble bees, clearing the upstairs room. It has taken a while as they had to get a van in from library headquarters ... three times! But it should be finished this week.

Saturday 8 September 2012

Floss has a home!!

Friends of Sandown library would like to say congratulations to a very pleased little girl called Keira, who won the FOSL competition "Name The Dog"!

It took a long time for the correct name to be chosen, and we were beginning to think the dog would be a permanent fixture! HER name has finally been guessed. It was FLOSS. (A small clue there - Friends Of Sandown Library FOSL -- FLOS)

We have raised an incredible £71 just from this, so well done Janet for having the idea and donating the dog! And a big thank you to everyone who joined in and had a go.

Saturday 1 September 2012

Volunteers at Sandown Library . . .

Visitors to Sandown Library may have noticed some extra staff members over the summer holidays. We have four young volunteers helping children to join the Summer Reading Challenge.

The girls, Chelsea, Rhiannon, Annie and Roxie, guide the children through the four parts of the Reading Challenge, awarding free gifts along the way.

The girls have given up their time and in return have achieved experience working with children, which will help them in their future careers.

The summer holidays is our busiest time of year, with higher visitor enquiries and demand for internet access, and it's been a great help to have these enthusiastic helpers stationed at their desk, ready to answer all the childrens' enquiries and provide encouragement with their reading.

They even happily agreed to wear the lime-green T-shirts!

FRIENDS OF SANDOWN LIBRARY

FRIENDS OF SANDOWN LIBRARY

MINUTES OF MEETING

THURSDAY, AUGUST 2ND 2012

Present : Heather, Ian, Jenny, Susan, Wendy

Apologies : Everyone else

As Ian was the only committee member present no decisions could be made and therefore we just had a general discussion about recent events and the current use of the library.

Jenny :

Jenny wished to thank Donna and Deborah for their invaluable organisation and help in the Horrible Science children’s event. It was a great success.

Also, thanks to Conrad and Donna for providing scones and biscuits for the very successful author visit.

Since the last meeting another £90 has been raised from donated book sales, Wendy’s plants and Janet’s dog (the correct name has still not been guessed!)

The library has used some of the money raised to purchase the complete set of Richard & Judy Summer Reads books. This collection has its own display in the library, and has been made non-reservable and part of a collection; therefore it cannot be removed from Sandown Library stock. Jenny & Louise are both very pleased to be able to use funds raised by FOSL to purchase books they would not otherwise get, and this has shown the success of the Friends Group so far.

The upstairs room that we would like to make use of has been half cleared, and the job will be completed in the next two weeks. The next stage is getting Mansells in to remove old pipes etc, and then decorating. Carpet cannot be fitted until the hole in the roof is fixed.

Heather :

Asked about the current state of the library with regard to stock, usage etc. Jenny showed the group records of issue figures (the number of books taken out) from the first eight months since the re-organisation. These show that out of the four libraries that have had hours reduced (SA, VE, FW & CO), Sandown has the most issue figures, more than double Cowes figures. All these branches have the same opening hours and staff hours.
New books are arriving weekly, but fiction books no longer remain at one branch. If they are returned to another council run library, they stay there. If they are returned to a community library they get returned to us. This system has replaced the old book rotation system. Non-fiction is still exchanged by branches e-mailing each other.

The community room is very well used, as is the library itself on days when it is closed to the public, for instance on Mondays three separate groups from IOW College will be using the library facilities both upstairs and the computers downstairs.

Donations :

We need more good quality books. The ones we don’t add to stock will be sold for FOSL.
Val Lee is selling hand-made cards on the counter, proceeds go to FOSL.

General Discussion:

The group suggested FOSL meetings could be reduced to quarterly, as if any member wishes to organise a fund-raising event they can talk to Jenny or Louise directly.

Heather suggested that at the annual meeting we could decide dates for the meetings of the next year in advance. Those present thought this was a good idea.

The next meeting will be Thursday, September 27th at 6.00pm.

Minutes for Friends (FoSL) meeting, Thursday 14th June 2012

Present: John, Robert, Susan, Donna, Deborah, Conrad, Jenny, Wendy, Linda

Apologies: Eileen, Laura, Louise, Heather, Janet, Ian

1: Discussion on the Plant and Book sale.
The group made nearly £60 on the book and plant sale, with even more money coming in for the general sale of books and the name the dog. There was a general opinion that this was good as there was not as much publicity as hoped and re fighting the Old Gaffers and one of the sunniest days of the year so far. It was suggested that more publicity would be needed for any future events and that posters should be made more visable. There was concern that the money raised is still being held in the safe at the library, and that we are still awaiting any details of a bank account.
Ian to action bank account.

2: Discussion of the upstairs room.
Jenny confirmed that the room is starting to be cleared, but there is a problem with a leaking roof that will have to be addressed before any further changes are made.

3: Discussion of the FoSL notice board.
Library staff have kindly set up a Friends of Sandown Library board as we are still awaiting our own one. However this is in the space where they currently have their notices so would like the space back as soon as possible.
Ian to action notice board.

4: Discussion of future events.
Jenny has had notification from Library services that they want the friends group to help with encouraging others, especially children, to use the libraries and to improve literacy. After much discussion it was decided that the friends group would put on two events during the summer holidays for primary aged children:
a) Horrible Science Day 31st July 2012.
This is to run in conjunction with the 'Reading Lab' scheme during the summer. Jenny will read some stories and there will be some fun science experiments for the children to get involved with. Donna to set things up with, hopefully, help from deborah and Conrad. If anyone else is willing to come along it would be most appreciated.
b) Beaches and Bottles Tuesday 14th August 2012.
Beach based stories by Jenny with craft activities of paper Sandcastle making and writing a message in a 'bottle' (this to be a paper one). Donna to set up and again, extra help would be appreciated for the craft side.
These events will go into the local schools newsletters and it would be helpful if they were put into the Village Talk. Also it would be good publicity for both the group and the library to get the County Press to come along and take photographs of the events – especially the science one where Donna is hoping to make volcanos.
Laura to action publicity.

5: AOB
Jenny asked that friends help on their 'meet the author' event on 29th June by supplying cakes and tea/coffee. Several members agreed to help out.

Next meeting is on Thursday 2nd August 2012.

Thursday 21 June 2012

Memory Morning at Sandown Library

Thanks to all those who came along to the Memory Morning event. It was held by Independant Arts. where everyone was invited to come in for a tea or coffee, and have a chat about their memories of the Sandown area. A selection of old photographs that have recently been posted to the library were displayed, and many places were identified.

An archivist recorded all the facts, and these will be put together with other Memory Morning events across the Island to create a large display later in the year.

Sandown Library has new Friends!

Friends of Sandown Library (FoSl) are a recently established, non-profit, community group, dedicated to supporting the library through a means of fundraising and promotion.
We are a small group of indivuals from a broad spectrum of the community who offer their free time to support Sandown library, whether it be fundraising, promotion of activities either via word of mouth or online, or even just by sparing a few hours to help out.
But what exactly do the 'Friends' do, you ask?
Well, apart from drinking lots of cups of tea, it is the 'Friends' ambition to raise awareness within the community about the many resources and events that the library has on offer; such as bi-weekly creative writing classes, computer lessons, knit and natters, and so much more - all free of charge.
And how do we expect to acheive this moutainous feat? As a new organization we have started out with baby steps, for example by making flyers, updating a regular blog, by having a facebook page:  www.facebook.com/FriendsofSandownLibrary, and also by spreading news - the good ol' fashioned way - by word of mouth. We will keep a folder at Sandown Library so that those who prefer not to use a computer, can still follow the 'Friends'.
In addition, the 'Friends' will be holding regular fundraising events. Our next event - Blossoms and Books' - is being held at Sandown Library on the 26th May from 11am. With books and plants for sale, and a fantastic raffle with fun prizes, it's sure to be a winner. Please do come along and support us!

..............
If you want to help out your local Friends of Sandown Library, please do join us at our events.  You can also 'like' us on facebook and 'follow' us on twitter. If you have goods to donate or a little time to spare, or if you would like some further information, you can reach us at friendsofsandownlibrary@gmail.com or you can pop in to Sandown Library and leave a message at the desk.

Blossoms and Books ...

The next FoSL (Friends of Sandown Library) event is 'Blossoms and Books' on Saturday May 26th from 11am, where - if you can't guess by the title - we will be selling plants and books and raffle tickets. We are urging local residents to donate any goods we could sell on, or just to come in and support the library by having a cuppa and a chat!

So please come along. There will be a fantastic raffle with lots of prizes and the chance to help our library raise funds towards a building 'mini-makeover!'
....................

If you have any further question or if you would like to put you name down to help out, you can either reach us at our e-mail: friendsofsandownlibrary@gmail.com, or at our facebook page: www.facebook.com/FriendsofSandownLibrary ...

Free Creative Writing Workshops at Sandown Library...

Janet runs a creative writing workshop every other Thursday at Sandown library, from 3pm - 5pm. Here, Janet talks a little about the workshop and how it got started.

After doing a degree course ,( Community Arts ) thro,Portsmouth University ,  in my 50s , I wanted to carry on writing for fun.So I started a creative writing course for the U3A , University of the third age. That group filled up quickly showing that lots of people wanted to write! But from the inquires I received for that group, I could see it wasn,t just third agers who had lots of interesting things to say....

Hence, the Sandown Library Creative Writing Group. For all writers,of all ages, from beginners to published writers and just for fun writers.Where it take us is the exciting bit! Whether its memoirs for the family, wonderful poems, closure on life events,or even scripts for stand up comedy. Some may be inspired to start that novel, some may just enjoy the writing games we play. But we will all release and increase our imaginations, thats for sure.

You can join Janet in Sandown library every other Thursday from 3pm through till 5pm.  For more information contact Janet at home, 404387, or speak with the Library staff for more information.

1.    Matters arising from Minutes:

Re Item 6 – Cover for lunchtimes. Jenny explained that whilst cover is needed there is a strict procedure for volunteers to follow. This was discussed and it was agreed that Jenny would find out how best to start this procedure and when.

2.    The amended Constitution was discussed and approved. The new version was signed and dated by all officers. A copy is to be held at the library and one with the Secretary.

3.    Ian is to discuss opening a new bank account for FoSL with Lloyds.

4.    Social Media

·    Laura has set up a new FoSL page and twitter feed. She will send links through to members.
·     Laura will produce a poster advertising the social media sites for display in the library and elsewhere.
·    Laura will link these sites together – including Sandown Library site

5.    Funding & Sponsorship – Now group is legally formed, contacts may be made.

6.    Minutes will be published online – Sandown library site and also kept in a ring binder file at the library – Ian will provide file.

7.    Ian will measure space for notice board in library – the old computer to be removed.

8.    Members Information sheets can now be given out and people can volunteer their time and skills to the group and library. The banner can be displayed.

9.    Events and ideas

a)    The group was shown around the upper floor of the library to familiarise themselves and to consider an idea from Jenny and Louise to use the store room as another meeting room. This room would need a number of alterations made, redecoration, and a large quantity of items would still need to be stored.  However, the room would be very useful and it was agreed that this may be a good goal for raising funds.  Further thought and discussion would be needed and a feasibility study should be prepared in due course. Ideas and/or contacts that or who may help in any way, would be welcomed.

b)    An event is to be held at the library on the 26th May – 11-3pm. Entitled ‘Blossoms and Books’  - the event will aim to raise funds by the sale of plants and books and other appropriate garden themed items.

·    Ian to request raffle ticket books from colleague and raise awareness.
·    Eileen to raise awareness and request donations or prizes from local garden centres.
·    Janet to seek donations from local businesses.
·     Donna will provide plants and staff a stall
·    Friends to provide cuttings and plants, books, donations as possible
·    Laura and Eileen to liaise re advertising and marketing
A meeting will be held on Thursday 17th May to discuss progress, confirm details and staffing.
10.    Donna requested that meetings be held on Thursdays through the summer due to work commitments.  This was agreed.

11.    The meeting closed at 7.35pm.
